First Trip Abroad: Connecting with the Global Interpreting Community

In late July, more than 10 deaf people and sign language interpreters from Hong Kong attended the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI) Asia Conference in Kuala Lumpur. Some worked as interpreters, others gave presentations on stage, and some participated in regional meetings. This marked a rare and significant event for Hong Kong's interpreting community, with a few of them participating in an international conference of this kind for the very first time.

Why would a sign language interpreter choose to pay the expenses on their own, spend time traveling to connect with interpreters from around the world, all while navigating unfamiliar space and languages? Did this first international experience enrich their careers as they had hoped?

For this Zoom conversation, We have invited three young interpreters who recently took this journey to the world stage. Join us as they share the motivations, challenges, and rewards of their trip.
