🌟 AHKSLI ZOOM Conversation 🌟
Theme: 💪🏻 The stories of Hong Kong Deaf Interpreters: Past, Present, Future 😊
In Hong Kong, Deaf interpreters have been seen on the television, social media, churches and the theatres, among other places. They also make use of the rich language resources they have to support communication needs of other Deaf people in places you may not even realize. Deaf people are marginalized within the interpreting profession - Compared with the hearing, there are less learning and job opportunities for Deaf people who want to become interpreters.
In this upcoming event, we invited 4 Deaf panelists from various backgrounds. Some of them had to share the role of an interpreter because their immediate environment left them no choice; some undertook formal training and have been working in professional settings for years; some has just started and wish to join the new generation of Deaf interpreters. What personal characteristics and experiences do they have that fit the role? What challenges do they face? What stories do they want us to know? What kind of future do they want for interpreting?
This event welcomes anyone to join – Maybe you are already a veteran, or “Deaf people can be interpreters” came as a surprise to you – Please come and share the stories told by these trailblazers.
